November Meeting Review

Photography & Graphic Design Discussed
Checking in with your graphic design group very early in the design process will help keep your projects on track - and help you avoid those major, last-minute design fixes. So said Dennis Wolf at the November meeting of the Minneapolis/St. Paul chapter of ASBPE.

With 15 ASBPE members and visitors in attendance, Wolf discussed photography, graphic design and working with graphic designers at the casual coffee-shop meeting. Explaining that the future of photography is digital, Wolf suggests the Nikon D70, as well as the Canon systems, are good choices for digital photography. Both take high quality photos for full-page or spread bleed, whereas the smaller digital cameras with fixed lenses will not, he said.

Once your magazine has a digital camera, Wolf noted, you will also need a good cataloguing system to handle the huge number of photos. He recommends MicroSoft iView, an inventory management program which allows you to upload, view and manage photos on your computer. Participants found this digital photo cataloging and storage information to be of particular interest, answering questions on issues with which they'd been grappling.

2007
The Chapter board will be meeting in December to review the year and begin planning a 2007 schedule. If you have any thoughts for the board, would like to take a more active part in the chapter, or are interested in becoming a board member, please contact President Lisa Lupo, lisa@ljwriting.com or 612-384-7105.

M/SP Summer Meeting
An advertiser that writes articles for your publication wants to include a line in their ad, stating, “Look for our article on page 47.” What do you do?

Your publisher wants to sell weblinks to advertisers … by linking their company names in your e-news stories to their websites. How do you answer?

An educational seminar is coming up that you’d like to cover. However it is on a cruise ship and your magazine can’t afford it. The company just called offering you free passage because a last-minute cancellation opened a spot. Do you accept?

The late summer meeting of ASBPE/Twin Cities included a lively discussion of these and several such ethical questions that editors face on a regular basis, along with a review of ASBPE’s new “Guide to Preferred Ethical Practices.” While no two editors had the exact same answer to any of the questions, we came away from the meeting with a deeper understanding of ethics and the realization that we’re all in the same boat!

M/SP Winter Meeting

We are working on the schedule for one last 2006 meeting. It will be a very casual, pre-holiday, mid-afternoon, coffee-shop meeting.

Keep an eye on this page for more information.
